Two Cozy Tea Lattes to Make at Home: Chai and London Fog

Hi friends,

When the weather turns cool, I start craving something warm, creamy and a little sweet. A coffee shop latte is nice, but you can make the tea version at home in about ten minutes, and you don't need any fancy equipment.

Here are my two favorites. One is spicy and bold. The other is soft and a little dreamy.

The Secret to a Good Tea Latte

A few quick tips before we start:

  • Use a little extra tea. Milk softens the flavor, so 2 teaspoons of loose leaf per cup makes it taste like tea instead of warm milk.

  • Steep it first, then add the milk. Let the tea do its thing in hot water, then pour in the warm milk.

  • Use any milk you like. Dairy, oat and almond all work.

  • No frother? A whisk works great. Just whisk the warm milk hard for 30 seconds, or shake it in a jar (with the lid on tight and a towel around it, since it's hot). Or one of these guys are really handy to have in the kitchen & easy to take on the go.

Spiced Masala Chai Latte

This is the cozy one. Our Spiced Masala Chai is a bold Indian black tea with cardamom, clove, star anise, cinnamon, ginger and a touch of vanilla, so it tastes like a latte even before you add the milk. I make it on chilly Saturday mornings.

What you'll need:

  • 2 teaspoons Spiced Masala Chai loose leaf tea

  • 4 oz boiling water

  • 4 oz milk of your choice

  • Honey to taste

How to make it:

  1. Put the loose leaf tea in your infuser and pour the boiling water over it. Steep for 5 minutes, then lift out the infuser.

  2. While it steeps, warm the milk on the stove or in the microwave until it's steaming. Froth it if you have a frother.

  3. Pour the warm milk into your tea and stir in honey to taste.

Make it iced: steep the tea strong, let it cool, and pour it over ice with cold milk.

Vanilla London Fog (Earl Grey Latte)

This one is soft and fragrant. A London Fog is Earl Grey with steamed milk and a little vanilla. The citrus scent of the bergamot is what makes it special. It's perfect for a slow afternoon with a book.

What you'll need:

  • 2 teaspoons Earl Grey loose leaf tea

  • 6 oz boiling water

  • 1/2 cup milk of your choice

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, or 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup (Or if you have lavendar syrup plus the vanilla is super yummy!!)

  • Honey or sugar to taste

How to make it:

  1. Steep the Earl Grey in the boiling water for 4-5 minutes, then strain.

  2. While it steeps, warm the milk until it's steaming and froth it if you like.

  3. Stir the vanilla and honey into the hot tea.

  4. Pour in the warm milk, top with the foam, and enjoy.

Make it iced: steep the tea strong, let it cool, and pour it over ice with cold milk and vanilla.

Want to Try More?

Both teas are available as loose leaf in our shop, and if you're new to loose leaf, our Sample Size is a great way to try a flavor before you commit to a full pouch. You can steep with any infuser, and we have a few in the shop if you need one.

I'd love to hear which one you make first, and what you add to yours. Leave a comment or send me a photo!

Happy steeping!

Nikki
